Life Versus Lifestyle

Dear Partners in Green,

There is a difference between life and lifestyle, and it is a difference that is becoming increasingly important in our time.

Life is about the things that truly sustain us: relationships, community, faith, compassion, beauty, and the health of the natural world. Life is rooted in the simple and profound reality that we are part of Creation and that our well-being is inseparable from the well-being of the Earth.

Lifestyle, on the other hand, often refers to the patterns of consumption that define modern Western culture. It is associated with what we buy, how much we travel, what we own, and the conveniences we have come to expect. Over time, lifestyle can quietly become the measure by which success and happiness are judged.

The problem is that our current lifestyle — especially in the developed world — is placing enormous strain on the planet. Our levels of consumption, energy use, and waste are simply not sustainable.

When lifestyle becomes the priority, life itself is placed at risk. The climate crisis, environmental degradation, and the loss of biodiversity all point to a system that is pushing beyond the limits of what the Earth can sustain.

This raises an important question: what are we willing to change?

Are we willing to reconsider aspects of our lifestyle in order to preserve life — not only our own lives, but the lives of future generations and the countless species with whom we share this planet?

Many of the choices that could make a difference are not dramatic or impossible. They involve small, thoughtful decisions made consistently over time.

These changes may seem small, but they reflect something much larger: a shift in values. They signal that we are choosing life over lifestyle.

Faith traditions often remind us that the measure of a good life is not found in accumulation, but in love, justice, and stewardship of the gifts we have been given.

In the end, the question may be quite simple:

Will we protect life, or will we cling to a lifestyle that threatens it?

Each of us must decide.

Thank you for being on this journey.

Wishing peace and health to you and your loved ones.

Till next time,
Beth
