November, Already?

Dear Partners in Green,

It seems that a topic on many people’s minds today is empathy, the ability to understand and to share the feelings of another. Today there is much discussion regarding the lack of empathy and the lack of compassion exhibited by our current culture and political climate.

Many of us are feeling fatigued, frustrated, and even disillusioned by the persistent crises we face — climate disruption, social division, economic instability, and political polarization. With each new headline that speaks of escalating danger or entrenched denial, it can feel like compassion is in short supply and that true understanding between people is receding.

But perhaps this is precisely why we need empathy now more than ever — not just as a sentiment, but as an intentional practice. Empathy allows us to recognize the shared human experience even when we disagree about causes or solutions. It calls upon us to see the person behind the opinion, the family behind the statistic, the neighbor behind the headline.

Consider these steps to nurture and express empathy during such trying times:

Empathy does not require agreement. It requires caring enough to try to understand someone else’s experience, especially when it differs from our own.

This month, as we enter into November — traditionally a time of reflection and gratitude — let us also renew our commitment to empathy. Let it guide our actions, our discourse, our advocacy, and our work for justice and ecological care.

Thank you for being on this journey of awareness, compassion, and intentional action.

Wishing peace and resilience to you and your loved ones.

Until next time,
Beth
